Weekly Overview - Sept. 12-16

HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ROOM 14...SEPTEMBER 12-16

Dear Parents:
Picture Day is tomorrow!! Your child MUST have his/her envelope in hand if you are planning to purchase pictures. PLEASE let your child know where the envelope is in his/her backpack if you are planning on sending one. I cannot search 30 backpacks! Thank you!
Please make sure that you read the "Here's What's Happening" note in its entirety each week.  I count on this parental support so that you know what is happening in class and can remind your child about activities. Don’t forget that in first grade there are MANY times when homework consists of something that a parent needs to sign. Please don’t let your child down by forgetting to check EACH NIGHT and sign as needed.
Also, if you have not joined the PTA, please remember that a portion of the small donation you make to join the PTA goes directly to your child in the form of classroom party funding, as well as funding many activities and resources. Please support your child and our amazing PTA. Joining the PTA does not mean that you are required to go to a lot of meetings.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Printing/Phonograms:  We will learn two phonograms: ee (2-letter "e") and ow (says ow, o):

Reading: This week we continue to work on and assess the students’ abilities to recognize and produce the long and short vowel sounds, both in isolation and as an aid to reading words. We will be reading three Big Books together as a class.  Big Books are used in whole class instruction to model good reading strategies (using the picture clues, using initial sounds, phonograms, looking for words within words, using sentence context). I am continuing to assess students’ reading levels.

Spelling: Monday- words 1-5 four times each- Tuesday-words 6-10 four times each with correct letter formation

1.  she     2.  fish     3.  the     4.  bath     5.  go

6.  no     7.  I     8.  can     9.  and     10.  a

MATH: We continue to work on number pairs to name the numbers 7,8,and 9. For example 8 can be broken up into the following parts: 5,3  4,4  6,2  7,1  8,0. We will work on this concept through games, whole class activities and our math pamphlets. We will also review addition notation: _ + _ = _

SOCIAL STUDIES:  Our study this week focuses on the function of a map.

SCIENCE: We will study two types of animals this week: reptiles and amphibians.

LIBRARY: If your child has brought home a library book, it needs to be brought back to school TOMORROW. Thank you for helping your child to learn this responsibility.
********************SPECIAL NOTES***************************
This Friday is the K-2 Family Picnic! Come enjoy lunch with your child on the Primary Playground lawn! Please let your child (and me) know if you will not be able to come so that I can arrange for your child to sit with a friend. Lunch will last from noon-1:00.

Please return the Emergency Food Pack as soon as possible.

Conferences begin this week on Wednesday and will continue through next Wednesday. Please remember that all of these days have a 1:37 dismissal.
