Weekly Overview - Oct. 17-21
HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ROOM 14...OCT. 17-21
Dear Parents:
Please remember to sign and return the progress report each week.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Phonograms: We will learn two phonograms - ai (long a in the middle of the word) and wh. There will not be a phonogram quiz on Thursday.
rain pail train main chair white whale when wheat whisper wheel
Reading: We are beginning a new book called Surprises. Theme 5 is called “Home Sweet Home”. There will be a new set of word cards and story words sent home on Monday night. The goal is for your child to be able to read all of the cards easily and with no hesitation. This may take more practice than the required once a week. Our story for this week is called “Moving Day” and it is about a hermit crab that needs to find a new home. These word cards are preprinted and much smaller than the previous cards, so please find an appropriate container to save them.
English (*new subject*)/Writing: We will continue to discuss beginning marks (capitals), ending marks (periods, questions marks and exclamation points), and question starters (words that signal the beginning of a question). The children will also finish their hat stories and begin word-processing them during computer lab.
Spelling: FYI - Our homework format will change next week! Because of the short week, the practice spelling will be on Thursday.

6. this 7. that’s 8. up 9. down 10. like
MATH: We will review parts of 10 to aid in understanding of addition and subtraction problems of 10. We will also explore how to make a chart called a table to organize number pairs. Our topic test will be on Friday.
SOCIAL STUDIES: We have begun a new unit entitled, “Changes Over Time”. We continue to explore the question “What was life like long ago?” through reading and discussion. We will continue this comparing and contrasting by focusing on the schools of the past and schools now. This week is Fire Prevention Week. We will be reading some information and stories about fire safety. Our firefighter neighbors from the Homestead station will be visiting on Friday and reinforcing some of the rules and procedures that we will have been discussing all week.
